On this day 100 years ago, the U.S. officially enters WWI on the side of Britain, France, and the Allies with a formal declaration of war against the German Empire and the rest of the Central Powers. This effectively broke the 3 year long stalemate and tipped the scales in favor of the allies. A little over 18 months later, the Armistice was signed and WWI effectively over.
"The War to End All Wars" was effectively just the first part of a 31 year war with a break in the middle. The League of Nations was formed, which failed, and Nazi Germany rose from the ashes of the poorly constructed Treaty of Versailles.
I could go on, and will if there is interest. But just the basics to start. Most know the general outline of the rest. Hitler rises to power, nationalism in Germany soars, and WWII is effectively started.
