Just watched his Hudl Highlight Film. He may be a better prospect than Adrian Martinez - defintely a better fit for the offense (from what I know about Helton) than Penix. Here are my notes:
- Long - Similar frame to Trevor Lawrence - Slightly smaller
- Throws very well from multiple platforms - feet not set, on the move, unable to step into throw, falling away, etc.
- Sets and resets platforms very quickly - always finds a way to get his feet in the best possible position in relationship to his target - appears to be very well coached
- Ball comes out on time when he does have clean pocket
- Good touch - put one ball in a very small window in the back of the end zone - easy ball to over throw or under throw
- Multiple throws made with anticipation - ball is out of his hand before WRs are open or have even made their cuts
- Throw at 1:53 is remarkable - pressure in his face, falling away, throws a corner route open well before WR has made his break - WOW
- Not afraid to work up in the pocket - trusts it - this is a learned skill - he has it
- Deep balls tend to float a little much for my taste - but were very effective at high school level
- Mobile enough - not a tremendous strider or accelator
- Can roll left or right - sets up well rolling left
- Throw at 4:03 - 20 yard out cut - steam coming off of it - hashes aren't near as narrow as NCAA or NFL but that is still a big time, next level throw
- Really does a good job throwing from multiple arm slots - can have whipping action, drop elbow, whatever he needs to do to put the ball in the right spot
- Throw at 5:01 appears to be some form (however simplistic) of a full field read
- A "gamer" - will abandon proper drops or mechanics based on situation (uncovered WR, heavy blitz red zone, etc.) to get the ball where it needs to be - this is not a bad thing - but may also explain 25 INTs
- So many examples of throws from different platforms - and he so quickly gets his feet/hips/shoulders square at his target - don't see this often from HS QBs
- Toughness? Did not see him take many hits - those obviously don't show up in highlight films
- Mentally? Where is the kid at in relationship to the offensive system? Saw some evidence of progressions but not a ton - Reads seem largely simplistic - Offense rolled him out and cut the field in half
- 25 INTs - Obviously concerning - But 414 attempts in 12 games is a TON at the HS Level - Dobbs by comparison had 357 attempts in 13 games in 2016
- Competition Level - Honestly know nothing about the schools he is going up against in California
