I've posted on here before about Danny. Again, I have no inside info nor any influence on UT decisions.
I have known Danny as a friend and have worked with him professionally too, from time to time, for close to 30 years. If it is not Blackburn or Fulmer and we do go "outside" then we cannot find anyone better than Danny. He has the experience as AD at both Wofford and TCU; as Commissioner of SoCon, and as President of the Carolina Panthers.
When he was at Wofford I served on the Athletic Advisory Board (my son is a Wofford grad). I was on his dissertation committee at USC and when he came over from Spartanburg for dissertation work he spent the night with us. I might add his dissertation is on university "branding" and while his degree is in education, this is a marketing background that should serve him well. That is why I was on his committee since my field is not education.
As an undergrad Danny played basketball and was a Phi Beta Kappa math major. Not bad.
Danny has all the tools and is going to make someone at outstanding AD. His track record is excellent and I have seen him first hand work with alumni and supporters, administration, and faculty. We all talk about fundraising, but having been in university administration myself, I can tell you that internal support is critical too. Danny works well with everyone.
The only knock on Danny may be he is in his 60"s, but he is high energy and stays fit. JMO but I think Blackburn would be a smart hire and while I really, like like Fulmer I am concerned about his lack of experience. I just hope UT gets it right.
