Precedents have been set by the college football playoff selection committee.
There are many advocating changes that need to be made to the selection in the future. However, if there are no changes, here is what I think is going to happen in college football.
As Nick Saban pointed out you’re going to see athletic directors canceling games with decent football teams and you’re gonna see everybody play Nothing but out of Conference schedules that include every double directional university known to mankind. Conferences are not equal and it’s obvious that there was an emphasis placed on Wins, no matter who they were against.
You were going to see the SEC turn down a 9 game conference schedule because the SEC doesn’t want to see its members take on eight additional losses during a season in how that will harm its member schools in future playoff playoff selections. As I stated conferences are not equal and you could even see the SEC play we’re gonna reduce our number of conference games. That is a distinct possibility.
Frankly, I’m a bit skeptical of the make up of the selection committee and who they represent. I think that needs to be looked into and their proceedings shown in public rather than back rooms over shots of bourbon and cigars.
Now onto what I think needs to happen moving forward.
The selection committee needs to be balanced in its representation by conference. They need to have their proceedings aired in public even though I do know they’re gonna have back room meetings amongst one another, just like the US Converse does, and there will be deal struck behind the scenes. However, there needs to be a formula put in place that utilize the strength of schedule and not just total numbers of wins with no reference to who those wins were against.
They need to eliminate automatic conference berths. Conferences are not equal and not all conferences merit the opportunity to play to become the best team in college football. They need to just seed the teams 1 through 12 based upon their strengths, and their strengths of schedule. Frankly, I would love to see them pair these games via a hat draw rather than how they are doing it now which in my opinion favors some teams.
If the college football world does not understand these things, they are at risk of the Big Ten and the SEC breaking off from the rest of football and leaving these mediocre teams for mediocre conferences to play against one another while the SEC in the Big Ten play for the big prize.
