Heupel has obviously put together a great defensive staff that imo has the key ingredient to long term success, which is position coaches that don’t have any desire to move on to coordinator positions. Gardner and Martinez are guys that are completely comfortable at this point just coaching one position group and excelling in that role. Brain Jean-Mary seems to be the only guy who has the potential and desire to eventually move up. With Banks likely going to be a head coach within the next 2 years, wouldn’t that almost guarantee Jean -Mary would be promoted to DC from within if he stays? Hiring an outside guy would be difficult because he’s going to want his own staff and we lose continuity/ great position coaches( though I would guess he might keep Gardner). Continuity is a key to success, and just wonder if the recruiting and results of our position coaches is simply too good to try and change everything even if they think there is a great candidate out there to take over the defense.
