QB

  • Shrout has had a strong start. Would call him #2.
  • Maurer shows the most flash but is the most inconsistent.
  • Bailey didn't get spring practice, and it's a lot to ask of him to be in the top 2-3 QBs at this point.
  • Biggest thing with Jim Chaney is that he needs a guy with strong decision-making and getting the ball out quickly.
  • JG is the guy they have the most confidence in. He will have to lose the starting job (don't see someone taking it from him).
RB
  • Gray hit a mental wall early last season. Was able to rebound well.
  • Hodge will be #3. He is a very mature and workmanlike kid. Down from about 230 to 215-217.
  • Crouch might still get some play in goal line situations depending on LB situation.
WR
  • One of the deepest groups on the team.
  • Ramel Keyton and Deangelo Gibbs are somewhat unknowns (more so Gibbs). Gibbs has high ceiling but low floor.
  • The freshmen are the ones that likely ascend next to Josh Palmer. Hyatt getting the most praise thus far. Surprised people with how polished he's been overall (not just speed).
OL
  • Doesn't make sense that NCAA blocked Cade when we are in this pandemic and when they are voting to make this year not count against eligibility.
  • More established on the left and right sides of the line when compared to years past. Still cross-training but more RT-RG versus LT-RT.
  • So deep that they can take a couple guys (e.g. Locklear and Cooper Mays) and use them at TE in jumbo packages.
DL
  • Losing Gooden hurts but he was still a bit of an unknown.
  • Line is unproven in spots, but they are a lot deeper.
  • Questions that need answering
    • Are they going to be play makers or space eaters?
    • With D Taylor gone, where is the pass rush going to come from?
LB
  • Best defensive player on team is Henry T.
  • Like Crouch, but how quickly can he pick up the position? Although Crouch didn't get spring ball he has had plenty of chances to make mental strides over summer through watching video. Also gave him chance to heal shoulder.
  • Move to OLB for JJP may be a good move as it's a little simpler than ILB in this defense. Don't underestimate Shelton Felton (south GA guy) being his new position coach as a positive move.
Will discuss the secondary on Monday with Austin.
