Was thinking about the possible staff changes and what it could mean.
Here are a few thoughts
- Who does he fire and why?
- Who is he able to hire as a result? Are they an improvement?
- Do we have assistants voluntarily leave for other schools? Is the truth told on this? You've always been able to tell this if there is an announcement with a destination tied to it. IE, Robert Gillespie is headed towards UNC, etc.
If he doesn't make any changes I can conclude a few things:
- He doesn't see that any changes are needed which is a bad move.
- He doesn't think he has the ability to hire perceived improved new coaches to fill those spots.
-Butch made a couple good hires this past season. Everything pointed towards Shoop being a championship type move. People knock Butch on here for surrounding himself with his buddies but he showed Jancek the door for Shoop. If you make the argument Jancek was forced out, that is fine. However, Butch was still able to hire a previously successful, highly regarded DC. He also hired the assistant from Miami which got us Warrior and Byrd (I think?).
This will communicate a lot to the fans and will show a barometer on what his coaching peers think about him. It is one thing to sell 17-18 year olds to play for you but another to sell successful grown men to come to your program. I do not like Butch and believe he is in over his head with this job. This is a great opportunity to see if other coaches around the country believe the same thing about him being a good coach and whether or not the perceived hot seat is bought into by the coaching world.
We saw Justin Wilcox jump to UDub going into Dooley's third year. Definitely wasn't a step up position, and if I recall correctly didn't correlate to a raise.
Ultimately, I believe we will not see many changes. Debord got it together the second half of the season and we got hot on the offensive side of the ball. From what we all saw, it appeared Butch and Co. wanted to honor Hurd by continuting to mold the offense around him as much at Dobbs to help him get the rushing record. There is a lot of honor in that because Hurd took a huge chance with Butch. However, when he left our offense improved dramatically. There are also too many unknowns at the QB position for a proven OC to come here. They have the inability to see our 2 future QB's on tape. I believe Martinez has to go. Our DB play has been horrible this year and I think we have the athletes and experience to be immensely better than we were. There has also been little improvement and Warrior's lack of development frankly pisses me off because he is a game changer. I also recall losing it early in the season because Gaulden wasn't on the field enough. He is easily one of our best players. There are also rumblings on this board from former VFL's who aren't fans of the way our DB's are coached up. Technique and scheme wise.
