College sports and coronavirus: Schools reporting positive tests among athletes

As college football players and other athletes across the country have started returning to campus for workouts, many are testing positive for the virus. Here's a look at several schools who have reported positive COVID-19 tests among their student-athletes.

At Least 30 LSU Football Players Quarantined Due to COVID-19 Outbreak

At least one-quarter of LSU's football team was in quarantine this week because of virus-related concerns, multiple sources tell Sports Illustrated, but that number is continuously fluctuating based on test results. At least 30 of LSU's 115 players have been isolated because they tested positive for COVID-19 or were found to have had contact with those who tested positive.

Kansas State suspends football workouts for 14 days after positive coronavirus tests

Kansas State has suspended all football workouts for 14 days following the most recent coronavirus test results, the school said Saturday. As of Friday, 14 athletes out of 130 tested across sports were positive for COVID-19. They are being managed according to guidelines, a process that begins with self-isolation for 10 days and until the patient is without fever for 72 hours without medication, whichever takes longer.

UCLA football players demand protection from 'injustices' amid pandemic return

The players demanded that a "third-party health official" be on hand for all football activities to see that protocols for COVID-19 prevention are being followed; that anonymous whistleblower protections are provided for athletes and staff to report violations; and that each player can make a decision about whether to come back to Westwood without fear of losing his scholarship or other retaliation.

Sources: Bethune-Cookman BOT holds emergency meeting to discuss conference affiliation

The Bethune-Cookman University Board of Trustees held an emergency meeting on Thursday in which the topic of its athletic conference affiliation was discussed, according to multiple sources, including the possibility of leaving the MEAC. Sources indicate the SWAC, as well as other conferences, were in the discussion as BCU considers its future.

N.C.A.A. Pressures Mississippi on Confederate Emblem on State Flag

The National Collegiate Athletic Association effectively warned Mississippi on Friday that it would not hold major competitions there unless the Confederate battle emblem was stripped from the state flag. Under an expanded policy that the association announced Friday, states will not be allowed to host championship events if the battle flag is a prominent, sanctioned symbol.
