Notre Dame football's self-imposed hiatus from practice stretched to two days Thursday after its cumulative numbers from two rounds of COVID-19 testing this week rolled in on Thursday. And the only football-related guarantee for Friday so far is that there will be a third round of testing this week staged that morning, per an athletic department release.

The Pac-12 Conference announced Thursday that it has hired veteran NFL and college football executive Merton Hanks to fill the newly created role of senior associate commissioner for football operations, essentially making him the conference's football czar. When he starts the job early next month, Hanks will oversee Pac-12 scheduling, officiating, replay command center, operations, the conference championship game and bowl relationships.

Federal Judge P.K. Holmes has denied the Razorback Foundation's motion to dismiss former Razorback coach Bret Bielema's lawsuit over its refusal to pay some $7 million he says he's owed following his firing. It had paid about $4 million but stopped paying after it contended he hadn't tried hard enough to get suitable work that could offset the severance payments.

- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league is likely to delay the start of the 2020-21 season beyond Dec. 1, its initial target date, in hope of playing as much of the schedule as possible with fans in the stands. In addition to hoping for the availability of a coronavirus vaccine, the league and several of its owners have been working with companies on developing fast-response tests that they believe could make it more feasible to host crowds economically and safely in the months ahead.
