I haven't looked very closely at Dave Doeren for whatever reason, but his record is a lot more interesting than I would have thought.
Doeren was the defensive coordinator for Wisconsin under Bret Bielema. He was recruiting coordinator before taking over all of the defensive duties in 2008. In 2010, Wisconsin won the big 10 with a great defense and Doeren landed the head job at Northern Illinois.

At Northern Illinois, he inherited a good MAC team and he made it better. They won the conference both years. The 2012 team was really good. They only lost 1 game ( by a point to Iowa) and they went to the Orange Bowl at 12-1. He left for NC State with a 23-4 record.

His first year at State was terrible.and it has skewed his brief overall record. The previous coach (Tom OBrian) had a decent record, but he was largely fired because of his inability to recruit. His classes were regularly ranked in the 90's .

Doeren went 3-9 and 0-8 in the ACC in year 1 (2013). His team fell to 112th in Sagarin. In year 2, they improved to 8-5 and they climbed 60 spots in Sagarin. They were 14 points better on the field.
They have improved every year since and they are now 8-4 and 24th in Sagarin. The 8-4 record was achieved against the 10th toughest schedule. NC State finished at 6-2 in the ACC. State is in the tougher division with Clemson and Florida State. That is State's best conference showing in 23 years. His 2017 team would be favored by 22 points over his 1st year team.

Doeren is not as sexy as some of the other names, but he is actually a really good football coach and program builder. NC State fired Tom O'Brian after a bowl season, but they don't want to lose Doeren to us. They feel like he has them set up for a run. We will see...
