Is it our linebackers or our DTs who are most responsible for this horrific run defense? Or is it scheme, i.e., coaching? I'm inclined to go with bad linebacking aided and abetted by bad coaching.
Watching the Mizzou game on tape, I noticed more outright fails by the linebackers than physical domination of our undersized makeshift DTs. The DTs by and large held their ground, which isn't ideal but should give the backers the chance to clean up. Unfortunately the latter were too often occupied and stymied by blocks, and this includes Kirkland.
Our DEs - and this includes Barnett - chronically overrun the offense, leaving them upfield and edges completely unprotected. This happens repeatedly, with Gaulden the only competent chance to prevent big plays on the outside.
