Yes I know Phil Fulmer had 2 losing seasons in his last four. But he somehow got us to an SECCG in the year before he was fired, and we ain't seen one since. I know Texas was having some down years with Mack, who had been stringing 10 win seasons for many years. Both coaches had won conference and national championships.
So Fulmer gets fired and we all know where we are today after the Kiffin/Dooley fiasco and end up with Butch Jones, who has proven after 4 years NOT to be a winner.
So Texas fires Mack and ends up with a coach, who ironically Tennessee thought they had a deal with, and Charley sets off all sorts of negative Texas coaching records in three straight losing years, and now he's fired, for a "hot" coach who can't be Navy, SMU and Memphis.
So my question is this. Are some college coaches who have proven to be winners too quickly tossed aside when they have down periods? I know we are living in an era where fans are more impatient and the thought of some shiny new coach is so appealing to replace the old one. I know all fans, including some Tennessee fans think they can get any coach they want because of the appeal of their school. But LSU had 2 months after Les Miles and end up hiring his defensive line coach.
So how long should a school give a chance to a proven winning coach who might be going through some down years?
