I see all these Butchers defending CBJ by saying "if Dobbs hadn't lost the SC game". A few points, if I may:
1. We'd be 5-6 right now if not for Josh Dobbs. Yes he's inaccurate at times, and didn't have his best game in Columbia. However, trying to take the heat off Butch/Uncle Mike and placing it on a kid's back who just single-handedly kept us from losing to Kentucky and Missouri is, well, deplorable. The coaches are the ones who trotted 50% of the offense (the questionable 50%) against App St, Ohio, and USC, yet it's Dobbs the University of Jones-ers want to blame. The same folks who won't allow any negative statement on Butch without nasty namecalling, are perfectly willing to throw 19-21 year old kids to the wolves.
2. Booger McFarland was giddy Sunday morning about our offense, saying when we bring the whole Multi-dimensional, balanced offense, this offense is explosive, basically pointing out that we didn't in several games. He's right.
3. I have repeatedly said that Butch has basically done everything he said he would when he took the job. I expected to lose a game we shouldn't this year, because he coaches not to lose at times, and we get burned.
4. My issue with Butch is that he doesn't handle success well. He is a plodder. A Planner. He's good at out-working people. He's just flat awful at doing things on the fly. Ok, God didn't give anybody everything. But whenever we have some success, he's reacted poorly, becoming this other guy, arrogant, taking names, lecturing people. I don't care if he's won a Natty or 0-50, I don't want my coach acting like that. The "mean ole Knoxville media" is decried all the time, but Austin Price got that treatment! He's one of us!
5. I think talk of firing Butch is silly. I had hoped that he would learn more on the job than he has, but there's still plenty of time. Surrounding yourself with Yes Men and uncle Mike is not doing that. This offseason is an ideal chance to get things moving in a direction we need. A 9 win season and a good bowl is positive (we have zero chance of beating a top ten team in the Sugar Bowl with our current roster), but if he comes back with arrogance like he has instead of trying to build, he will miss a big opportunity. I truly hope that the new AD gives him a one year extension and a raise, and a mandate to make some needed changes. The AD needs to be a resource, not just a direct deposit source.
Our fanbase is about the same as every other school with tradition and expectations.
