There’s a saying in football: “You play on 3 fields: The box, the boundary, and the field.” (Or the box, the left, and the right) When they’re dropping 6-8 guys every play and you’re sending 3 or 4 out on routes, you’re just not gonna carve up a defense thru the air. You might complete a pass, but there’ll be someone there to tackle/push out of bounds immediately.
So, naturally, you regroup at halftime and run it on em until they play a more conventional defense. When they don’t adjust, you run for 300 yards.
Imo, that was a calculated gameplan by BG to reduce being torched thru the air and force is to run more to try and shorten the game, hoping they’d be able to muster some points and keep it close. No one, and I mean NO ONE else we play is gonna run DOLLAR vs 11 personnel. NO ONE is gonna give us a 6-on-5 box like that for a whole game.
The passing game will come back when we play conventional defenses. When we face 7 man boxes (like we likely will next week), look for the “NOW” screens, more deep shots, more RPOs, and more of Josh doing what Josh wants. (I’m guessing he went into halftime like, “Man, they’re REALLY not gonna change their defense? Alright. They asked for it” *Run Game intensifies*) …Nice to have a coach that knows how to make halftime adjustments. (Still not sure if that’s legal. Haven’t seen us do that in a while)
