I charted missed run fits and missed tackles throughout the game. It was drastically better in the second half. I am not going to post the numbers, but it was ugly in the first half. There were defensive linemen who clearly need to fight pressure and 'trade hat', and were not doing so. There were linebackers playing laterally and not downhill. Both of these items were much better in the second half. It wasn't perfect, just better. The defensive line was much more active and the linebackers were more downhill and ran to the ball better, particularly Jumper. McDowell may be the best option we have at Will, but I am not that high on him right now. He gets blocked relatively easily.
I think we are pretty good in the 4-3 because Bynum is playing well. Highly likely that Shoop uses him appropriately and does not ask him to do things he cannot... But in his limited reps, 51 plays very well.
LaTroy Lewis looks to be about 75%. I am a big Lewis fan. He is physical on the end of the LOS and plays the run as well as anyone. Would love to see him get better.
Elliot Berry got some burn at Will. He was in our 3-2-6 package. The 6th DB in this package was Baylen Buchanan.
On Michel's 1st TD run, good run fits all around but not physical enough from Elliot Berry and Kahlil Mckenzie. Jumper missed the tackle but if the run fits are better from 41 and 99, his angle to the ball is much easier. Jumper was in the correct run fit, IMO.
3rd and 1 QB sneak from Georgia... Great plays by Danny O and McDowell.
Evan Berry played well in his one series. He was active in the run game, and the one time he was targeted he was in pretty good shape.
Pass protection in the 1st half was solid until obvious passing situations late in the 2nd quarter. Staying in mixed downs are huge for this offense.
3rd and 13 for Georgia. Tennessee down 24-14. Love this call from Bob Shoop... We have 6 men at the LOS. We ultimately sent 5 with Vereen dropping into the flats. But UGA didn't block it correctly and McDowell was untouched to force a throw away by Eason. Critical down and we gave them a new look.
Marquil Osborne absolutely owned Mecole Hardman on the punt return unit. Osborne was the anti-gunner and Hardman couldn't get free and pursue the returner. Love Osborne's attitude.
Not getting a ton from Kongbo right now. His 'rawness' is showing up against SEC opponents.
I am not a huge fan of D. Mixon's game. He doesn't bust assignment, he's never in the wrong gap... I respect him for being sound in the departments. But he is not very physical... Hard to imagine that Phillips or Taylor cannot take those reps from him.
DE's that can run and safeties that can tackle give this offense a lot of trouble. Our inverted veer and zone read are our bread and butter... DE's that can show a keep read but still impact the ball carrier with their athleticism are hard to handle. I think Lorenzo Carter (#7 for UGA) was a big reason Dobbs didn't keep the ball more. Safeties in the box that can tackle 1-on-1 are tough as well, for all the same reasons. A&M will be a tough match-up in both departments.
Gaulden is getting better. He played his best game vs UGA.
Lastly, I charted DB's targets in the passing game and thought we played well. We have pretty average talent at CB but both played well, minus the huge play at the end. We made Georgia catch a lot of contested balls. We will need this and more vs a very good A&M WR corp.
Some stuff from Doug Mathew's Big Orange Sunday:
Dobbs:
15/25; 187 yards; 2 TD 1 INT
Eason:
13/25; 125 yards; 1 TD 1 INT

Some stuff from Doug Mathew's Big Orange Sunday:
- Linebackers are average. Playing the best they can, but are average SEC LB's
- Left Tackle is average at best
- Sloppy Tackling
- Bubble screen blocking is bad
- Winning Formula going forward -- Great kicking game, Offense has to protect the ball and protect the defense (time of possession as well), Defense has to win with the front 4 because we don't cover well enough to bring much pressure.
