Back in March my wife started having some health issues and during the process of diagnosing those issues, it was discovered that my wife had lung cancer with spread to the brain and bone. She has never smoked, healthy lifestyle, etc., so needless to say we were shocked and devastated. My wife received radiation therapy on her brain first and the radiation oncologist felt good that he was going to be able to take care of those lesions. The lung cancer (non-small cell) tested positive for a mutation (EGFR) and so she began targeted therapy for that lesion as well as the bone (in addition receiving a drug to help with her bone re-growth in the lytic lesions).
She's been having a host of side effects, most troubling has been the decreased appetite and nausea. We have some things we are working through on those, but she needs to get her nutritional status back up in the next few weeks. Today my wife had her first scan since she started the targeted therapy and the lung lesion had decreased in size about 80%. She'll have a MRI in August to evaluate the brain lesions.
We are pretty excited about the results. We know it is still a long road ahead and that these cancers recur often. But, it is a good first response and we are thankful and blessed.
