What about the Gruden rumors? He was on a national radio show this morning and didn’t but any of the rumors to bed. You will continue to hear speculation because he want put it to bed. Currie is out working the the search.
What do you think the timeline is? I think he wants to get it done the week after Vandy game. IMO he will not get it done before Vandy game. He would like someone at the podium after Vandy game for recruiting purposes. Lyn Jay Dixon has set up a visit the first weekend in Dec. That tells me TN believes they will have a coach by then. Currie as indicated to recruits that this is the timeline. There could be a delay if one of the coaches he choices plays in a conference championship game. It could influence a Norvell for example.
How much damage control have they had with recruits? Currie has had a lot of conversations with committed guys, former committed guys and some top target guys.trying to ease their minds. He is telling them that he knows the window is tight but be patient with him.
How would you describe Butch’s tenure at TN? in the beginning he did good things. There were a lot of issues on and off field. Did he make the right coaching hires when making changes? He gave a lot of games away. He had a lot of injuries. Butch’s greatest ability is to come into a hostile situation and sell hopes and dreams. I don’t think it is in Butch’s DNA to be a sustainer. He is a rebuilder. It comes a time were the hopes and dreams has to have evidence and results. The tenure of Butch changed when he lost to Vandy last year. What was on the line and to not to get it done. He did good things but he probably over stayed his welcome. He is not built to stay at a place long. He is a rebuilder. A rebuilder to a point. It is line of scrimmage league and TN has issues.
You don’t want to hire a guy with the same personality as Butch? Does that play a factor? PJ Fleck would not make that list. I have not heard his name at all. You usually go totally opposite. When Fulmer was let go they did a 180 with Kiffin. Nest UT coach should have an edge. Wants someone strong in dealing with parents and media. Someone not so sensitive. Everybody is hearing the same names…Mullen (will he make a move), Norvell (hot name out there). Will FL get Kelly? Will Frost go to Nebraska? DJ Durkin has had some talks with TN but remember this is just day 3 of the search. I think Currie or TN officials will have a lot of talks with different people over the next 10 days. I don’t think he will just talk to two coaches and that will be it.
Will up the budget on a coach say 6 to 7 million? Currie said he has all the resources he needs. What does that really mean? Do I think TN will go in the 6 million range…for the right person yes.
How difficult is it to cover a coaching search? It is harder than it’s ever been due to social media. For Ex. There were rumors that Gruden was on campus last night. Seems like we are always chasing ghosts. The thing you want to do is that you want to be right not just first.
Media wise how important is the next game to have thick skin? It is a confidence level. Has to be in control and not get rattled. Butch had a hard time with critics. If you win it doesn’t really matter.
Cutcliffe? I think David is very comfortable where he is at. David wants control. The amount of people he wanted last time was an issue. Not just coaches but trainers, admin, nutritionist. That would have been very expensive. I think he used that on purpose to be the hang up. That he really doesn’t want to leave Duke. I would be surprised if it got down the road with Cutcliffe.
