What did you make of Jancek’s comments on MLB? Kirkland is making a move there. Anxious to see how he would perform because he missed an whole spring. Kirkland left an impression with Jancek in the way he performed in some scrimmage work Monday night. See where it takes off Thursday. Safe to say he has made a move. Like where he is at mentally. Like where is playing physically as well. Playing instinctive.

They like the way he gets off blocks and his instincts? Jancek made the point that the play never goes as it is chalked up. Kirkland understands leverage. How to shed a block. Jancek also made it clear that the other two candidates are a walk on in Colton Jumper and Bynum. Bynum is the most experienced. Started Iowa game.

Stripes off? What do you make of Shy Tuttle? Shy is learning how to practice. He made some plays in Spring and did some good things but he would make a play and then take some plays off. He didn’t understand how to continue with effort. To play every snap. He has improved with that this summer. Gotten in much better shape. Drooped some weight. Showing more athletic ability. Has been a better play maker. He will play very early.

Interesting story on Volquest about the distribution of tackles? They will rotate a bunch of guys. Not going to have to play the same ones. AJ and JRM last year played over 1200 snaps last year. Danny Obrien averaged 50 snaps a game. That is too many. Want the snap numbers down so they can go harder. More depth at the DE position than they have ever had. Have more athletic ability in the back half than they ever have had. Will give them flexibility to play different packages. Big difference in the defense this year is that they will not be piece milled up front like in the past. Barnett changed the game last year in what they could do. They played 13 games last year with just 3 DT. That is unheard of. They got Owen Williams, Dan O’Brien, and the 2 young DT’s and then you throw in Vickers. They can go 5 deep at DT. The 2 young guys will have growing pains.

OL? The dilemma they are facing with injuries? What can we look forward to leading up to Bowling Green? It starts this Thursday on how fast they can get Jashon back on the practice field. He has missed essentially all of Fall camp. He has had some digestive issues. A tweaked ankle. They need him back so they can start to figure out where their best 5 is. Got to get Jack Jones back. There top 3 offensive guards were out last practice ( Jashon, JJ, Kendrick). When you go in where Jack Jones and Jashon are your guards then you got Kendrick battling Thomas for RT. The reality is you got to get healthy to get your best 5 out there. Kendrick was banged up but will be back. Jack Jones was more of a rest deal.

What is the procedure with family visiting practice? Don’t know if he has a set policy. You got to call and ask. ( Brent is stumped). I havent seen a lot of parents at practice. One thing to come to spring game but don’t see much parents at practice. It is not a common place. I am not saying parents are not calling coaches. In years past there has been more than one parent wanting to know why their kid didn’t play on Saturday.

Qurterback updates? Recruiting checklist? We will go position by position with updates going forward. Run about noon every day. Way to update the recruiting board in a simplistic manner ( Brent dumbing it down for us). The QB position they have Dormady at the back up. Sherion Jines is here. They got a commitment in Guarantano. Hunter Johnson is a guy from class of 2017 we are keeping an eye on. TN vs Notre Dame battle. He canceled in last visit to ND. TN is the last place he has visited. Talked about making a decision before HS season starts. I was at a Rotary club meeting yesterday where Butch told the crowd that recuiting was going well and there would be some recruiting news over the course of next week. There been some speculation that it might be Johnson who grew up in Indy. Hunter and his parents grew up TN fans. In part because of Peyton Manning with the Colts.

TN has a lot of QB? They have quite the log jam? Assuming if everyone stays. They want to sign a QB every year. It is hard when you look at schools across the country with players transfering out. Really hard when you sign multiple QB’s in a class. You go back and look at TN you have to go back to Heath Shuler and Colquit. They came in highly acclaimed and stayed their entire career. Peyton and Brandon Stewart came in together and Stewart transferred. Casey Clausen came inwith 2 other QB’s and both of those guys left. Ainge and Schaffer and Schaffer left. Riley Ferguson came in w/ Dobbs. Just don’t see a lot of QB who come in the same class and stay. Obviously Dobbs is the man but you betetr have your #2 guy ready.
Dormady has been so inpressive? Does it come a priority to get him in games? I think you have too. Get him some experience early in the season. You go back to Dobbs Fr year and Butch decided not to do that. Against Austin Peay he played Worley and Peterman. Then he found himself playing Dobbs against Bama. Josh would have been better served playing earlier. You hav eto play Dormady. Got to get him on the field in Nashville just in case Dobbs loses a helmet or tweeks an ankle. Don’t think you want to find yourself in the middle of the season with a lot to play for with someone who has not taken a snap.

WR’s? What about Vincent Perry and the depth at WR? Liked what the Mid-State guys have done. Malone has been the most consistent than he has been at TN (great to hear this). Josh is more comfortable just being Josh now. Not the 5 star recruit Josh Malone with lofty expectations. Practice habits are much improved. Jennings has a chance to be special at the WR position. I don’t want to put any labels on him but he has a chance to be special. Vincent Perry is a guy John Brice and FortenBeast talked about years ago. Even coming off an ACL. He has really improved the last few practices. He is a natural slot guy. I do like the way this unit is playing now compared to Spring. I know they had some guys out but the production is much better than the Spring. The drops are down. Much more dialed in. Competiton at WR is much better. ( Sounds like Azzani is coaching them up)

What are the rest of schedule for practicing this week? Classes start today so no practice today. Practice Thursday, Fri, Sat. Then they will settle in to almost a game like routine. Even though they got another week of camp the school schedule didn’t do TN a lot of favors. You look around the country a lot of teams do not start class until another week. TN has to hop out of camp mode early.

That’s all folks! Go Vols!!
