HVAC Guys, help...

Need some advice. I have a 2.5 ton unit, about 12 years old tied to a double pole 20 AMP breaker at the panel. Last week we had some freezing rain that froze the fan while it was running, which tripped the breaker. So, I went out later that day after it warmed up and thawed everything out and flipped the breaker back on. About an hour later, it tripped again.

Fast forward to today. HVAC tech just left the house and said the compressor is bad. It's pulling 15 AMPS and rising...which explains why it keeps tripping the breaker. Old unit is R-22. To upgrade, I'll need new air handler and outside unit...around $5,800 installed for a Lennox.

Is there anything else I can do in this situation, or do I just need to take it like a man and move on? I'm guessing putting the unit on a 30 AMP breaker would be a no-no? Any options are welcomed.
