We are in the “what if” part of the year when it comes to football season and I wanted to get your opinion on a few things. I'll preface this by saying I don't expect any names, just the impact these scenarios may have. You have been around college football for a long time and I'm interested to see what your opinions are if certain things happen this season.
What impact on the Tennessee brand would these season have, i.e. National perspective? Recruiting, coaches leaving or being on the hot seat, money for the program, and anything else you think it may impact. We have been down so long, but still have in most Tennessee fans a reputation national has a historically good program, including myself. I'm of the opinion this year it’s really either 2 steps forward or always being the where we are now.
I realize some of what I am asking is obvious, but Alabama was down in the dumps in the early 2000's and look where they are now. Could this year spring us into a similar path, or could this year put the final nail in the coffin and send us down a Miami's path into now a program with relatively little respect nationally. Or will we just fall somewhere in between,
I’m not saying any of these outcomes is more likely than another:
National Championship. Undefeated or 1 loss doesn't matter. We win the big one.
SEC champion but lose in the college football playoffs.
Win the east but lose in the SEC championship in a close game. High profile bowl.
Win the East but the SEC championship is not very competitive and the argument is we won the East because the East had a down year.
Miss out on Atlanta all together.
