and it really is eye opening. I’m going to give an opinion and then ask the mods a couple questions.
Defense. Typically I defer to others with much more knowledge but I’ll give it a shot. Up front we’ve gotten better every game. Particularly kongbo and phillips. Phillips may be the best d lineman on this team. The tackles have been ok. No playmakers there. Sorry, shy isn’t it although easily the most disruptive. Something I noticed and this is concerning. They’re being taught to read/react. No instinct, no disruptive-ness. And it’s by design. Yikes. Taylor is our best pass rusher but he and kongbo both lose their assignment and that’s killing us on big plays.
Linebackers. Just not good. Aside from Bituli, this is the worst group in the league. They’ve been HAMMERED enough. Time to see ignot, page, etc... they literally cannot be worse.
Safeties. Ok, not great, big plays are less but still happening. See Ga tech and Florida games. Their minds seem to be tying their feets up. Just not well coached. Yep, not well coached at all.
Offense.
This is where I feel comfortable and I could get all technical but f it, I just don’t care. I’ll give a little insight but mostly just opinion.
Backs. They are ALL fantastic and I think JK4 is the reason. They run harder and more violently than any backs I’ve ever seen collectively. If they were in Georgia’s backfield, people would be talking about heisman backs-plural. Yes, they’re that good. It’s truly amazing at how talented they are but on top of that, they are just not going to be denied and they’re not taking a hit. They’re delivering them.
Tight ends. Ethan has become a different player in the blocking scheme. It looks as if he took the scouts words personal. He’s also catching the ball well and getting open. He’s putting identity on film that is going to get him drafted. Yep, he will get drafted.
Behind him is PITIFUL. We literally don’t have another tight end. Damn we are in trouble here. These spread offenses rely on them to be athletic and safety as well as playmakers. We simply don’t have anybody else. Piss poor job in recruiting this position.
Offensive line. Yes, I am aware of the perceived struggles and yes there has been some. In fact, I’d go as far as to say maybe the right guys aren’t playing and if they are, maybe out of position.
Left tackle is an issue. He’s just not good. Soft as cotton and should have been a 3*, he’s not likely to get any better.
Left guard by committee. Jack had a terrible time at Florida but he’s still the best player at that position. In fact, Kendrick can’t play guard. Goodness.
Center. Most solid position on the line when 75 is in there. Had a great year.
Right guard. Struggled some with blitz pick ups/ handoffs, but expected as a frosh, freaking beastly. Going to be an all pro one day.
Right tackle. By committee. Lol imo I’d put Tatum here and I’d put Kendrick at left and jack at guard and I’d roll out the rest of the year. Just my opinion even tho it’s right.
The offensive line overall has played really well and the folks so down on them just don’t understand what’s going on but even against Georgia there were lanes, big lanes to run. Even against those 8 and ten man boxes. So, stop crucifying them and Wells, that’s not the issue, but here is the issue and why this team is really bad.
The QB is a pvssy. Literally scared to death and is 90% of the offenses problem. I’m not kidding. This is a fact. I’ve watched 22 of 3 games and it’s baaaaaad. He’s a great 7v7 cat when no bullets are flying but live action puts this cat in the foxhole.
The other one that’s played isn’t much better but ima give him some leeway. In fact, I think he’s improved every time he’s stepped on the field. ESPECIALLY his mechanics. He was afraid to begin, but he isn’t anymore. He’s stepping into throws, and he’s making better decisions. Not his fault his receivers SUCK. Yep, y’all can hate me for calling players out and that’s fine but they’re are so bad it hurts. This 22 is the most I paid attention to. My 15 and 12 year old run better routes and the pee wee team my nephew is on has better route tree. It’s pathetic. I’m sure it’s butchs stupid route tree but here’s the issue with receivers. They aren’t getting coached and when they are it’s terrible coaching. The system they’re trying to run is flawed. A buddy of mine who’s a d coordinator in this league says to me about the throw game.. “We literally do NOT work on anything special. We work on keys and we know exactly what they’re running as far as routes. It elementary. It kills their run game which is something they’re really good at but we do not give one second of respect to their throw game. I promise you this Matt, they cannot beat us throwing the ball so we sell out to stop em from running”.
Getchasomeofthat.
I should mention that 6 people who I trust have told me every player in the locker room outside of JG2 and QD12 believes the answer to the QB problem lies in another Texas gunslinger. Take that for what it’s worth and maybe the mods will corroborate but that’s what I’ve been told. First couple times I’ve shrugged it off. Now, I believe it.
On the flip, our corners are so bad it hurts. Again, I question more the talent than coaching here. Don’t believe? Watch a film from last year and then this year. It’s night and day as far as technique, they just are very good players.
So, in summary, my opinion only, we aren’t good because our QB and receivers are terrible because they’re scared and poorly coached with poor plans. Defensively our corners aren’t talented enough and our safeties are poorly coached.
All of this leads back to the top and the leadership that’s lacking.
I can say this without reservation after looking at these films. This team will not win more than 6 games and possibly 7. Won’t, will not happen I don’t care what anybody tells you. Very few teams are capable of winning in any league in 2017 without being able to complete the forward pass.
This is one mans opinion. Feel free to disagree, ask questions, or just bitch. All are welcome.
