Yep, everyone else has had to deal with it too, but who else inherited the dog crap that Lyle left? We have roster gaps that we've been unable to fill because of COVID. We needed our young talent to be ready, and they're simply not:
We knew what we had with JG, but without spring practice and a normal fall practice we were unable to get HB or anyone else ready.
Same goes for WR. We lost 2 good ones, have some experienced kids who are simply not very good, but haven't been able to get the freshmen ready.
The two kids CJP signed at TE in 2019 are busts. That is on CJP.
Because of the above, we're one dimensional and our offense sucks. It's hard to run when the bad guys know it's coming. Moreover, can you blame CJP for not trusting any of our QB's?
I do think CJP and staff screwed up on Martinez and Penix. Both are better than Mauer and Shrout. That is on CJP too.
The same can be said for LB's, OLB's, and DB's. We lost 3 pretty good players at all 3 positions, and are playing shorthanded because the more talented kids are simply not ready to play. We've lost a year of development where we needed it most, with our young, more talented kids.
Assuming 2021 is a "normal" year, and it should be based on the vaccine news, we'll see development. If we can hold this recruiting class together, we'll have more reinforcements as well.
My confidence level in CJP has slipped some, but I'm trying to be a realist. Not an apologist, but he did inherit a dumpster fire and has lost a year of development.
As far as not kicking the FG, that was a mistake and he said if he had to do it again, he'd kick it. That's positive. Of course, if Cimaglia missed it, folks would be bitching about why we didn't go for it. Kind of a 50/50 situation. Not nearly as blatant as Lyle kicking against OU or not going for 2 against FL. CJP may fail, but he's a better coach than the intern.
We're all depressed and discouraged, but I don't think we'll truly know how good or bad CJP is until next year. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait yet another year.
