Nobody wanted Pete Carroll. Nobody believed in him. No one went to the games. They stumbled through a terrible first season w/ him as HC. It clicked for them in Season Two, w/ Carson Palmer and a roster of future NFL players.
By the time Carroll left USC, people considered him a college coaching God. When he was brought aboard (as their third or fourth choice), the hire was universally panned.
