LWS can chime in also if I am off slightly bc I am going strictly from memory and he has everything in a database regarding this info. Per NCAA rules, you are limited to 25 initial counters per year no matter where you are in regards to your 85 man roster. Yes, you can blue shirt someone which is essentially counting their spot forward or you can also sign under 25 and "save" those spots for the next class. This is how our initial counters have looked the last few years:
2010 - used 24 initial counter spots so we carried 1 counter forward (rivals shows 27 signees but 3 didn't make it to campus).
2011 - used 26 initial counters (25 initial counters PLUS the 1 we "saved" from 2010. Again rivals shows we signed 27 but only 26 made it to campus).
So far we were even on counters heading to 2012...
2012 - used 22 initial counters (signed and enrolled 22 so we carried 3 counters forward)
2013 - used 21 units counters (rivals showed we signed 22 but only 21 enrolled so we carried the 4 counters from this class PLUS the 3 from 2012 so 7 total).
At this point we have "saved" 7 initial counter spots from 2012 & 2013 classes to use moving forward....
2014 - 31 (we used our 25 initial counters for this year and used 6 of our 7 counters we had saved from the prior 2 years).
2015 - 29 ( used our 25 initial counters for this year PLUS our 1 initial counter left and are left 3 counters short that we "stole" from the 2016 class).
Based on what we enrolled shown on rivals commitment lists we are 3 spots short heading into 2016 class BUT that doesn't count Jon Johnson, Mixon, RDAIV & Joe Young that were all brought in post signing day as blue shirts during the last 3 seasons and are countered as Initial counters as well.
That gets us to our -7 number that we are down for 2016. 25 initials counters MINUS the 7 spots we have "stolen" from this class leaves us with 18 spots for the 2016 class. Now, if it comes down to signing day and we have a difference maker that wants in the class that would put us over the 18 limit that Butch deems worthy of stealing a spot from 2017 then I could see that happening but it won't be more than 1-2 spots. Doug Mathews said that an assistant coach (presuming Thig since they are bff's) told him that Butch has said repeatedly in staff meetings that 18 is the number he is intending on working with this class.
Attrition from the current roster has no impact on allowing us to sign more. Actually, for us to bring in 18 this year plus 25 for next year we need 13 underclassmen (that's right, thirteen Freshman and Sophomores) to leave between now and then to stay under the 85 limit. We currently have 85 scholarship guys and only 15 seniors and 15 juniors. To bring in 43 over the next two years means we have over signed by 13. Juniors leaving after this year like Cam or North doesn't affect that number since they would be gone anyways in the next two years. Thirteen Freshman and Sophmores have to go....
