I don't know, or care, how this will be received by the Pumpers or Nega Vols. I've got some good info, so I'm posting it.
I played golf today in Charlotte with the father of a Big 5 coordinator that has worked with CBJ and DeBord. I don't think it's appropriate for me to name names, so please don't ask.
Apparently the kid and CBJ are on the outs because he'd like to be at UT. So, consider the source.
He saw my UT bag and asked if I was a CBJ fan. I said, the jury is still out. I said I love the recruiting but "show me the money". I want W's, especially FL and Bama.
Below is what he told me:
Jancek, as rumored, was not terminated due to poor coaching. So, unlike what some think, CBJ made this move for "family" reasons and not to upgrade. Obviously, a byproduct was the upgrade to Shoop.
DeBord was livid that a QB coach was not hired. DeBord thinks our GA is a good QB coach but he really thinks CBJ should've hired a QB coach. Nothing against our new TE coach, just a coaching position of need.
This is DeBord's last year. He will retire after this season.
The guy I played with thinks CBJ is a great coach but has changed a lot since the CMU and Cincinnati days. He thinks he's now coaching scared. He referenced OU and FL last year as examples. Too conservative.
Just is not his old, damn the torpedoes self. I specifically asked if he thought he was in over his head, and the answer was NO! Rather, he's just scared to make a mistake. Loves his job and the opportunity and doesn't want to blow it.
I asked about a DeBord replacement and he thinks that CBJ will promote from within. Sticking with "family", cohesion, and, consistency. Another example, per my golf buddy, of playing scared. Doesn't want to rock the boat.
Of course, there are inconsistencies in this report. Supposedly CBJ wants to promote from within the family but he did make two hires this year from outside.
Overall, the report was positive, thinks CBJ is a good/smart coach. All good except the playing scared part. My partner thinks he has to get past that to take us to the next level.
