Is it just common now for parents to hold back children for sports?

I just read the thread on CFA's age and the comment from Rivals that about 50% of recruits are outside of the standard age for their class. My youngest daughter is in the 2nd grade and has a class with a boy over two years older than her. My impression is they waited to enroll him in school so he could be in the best position possible to do well in sports.

Has this become a common choice for parents? Is it all sports related, or are there other reasons?
