Is proof reading still a thing for online journalists?

I don't think it's fair to call Brent and Co. out alone on this, because I see it from respected news sources all over the internet just about every day. Typos, errors, words misused, etc. I assume all of these guys have a communications degree of some kind? I see it on ESPN.com, I see it on the multiple news sites I frequent, I see it here. And I'm by no means great at English or writing. I did well in all the English/communications classes I took in college, but I assumed it was just because those are generally the easiest classes/degrees offered. Grammar was jammed down our throats and we were graded strictly (in lower level classes mind you).

Is proof reading not considered a professionalism thing among journalists in online articles? I'm not going to stop reading regardless, but when I have to read over something like this once- "A new defensive coordinator is charged with breaking in three new starters in what can charitably be killed a mediocre unit in 2014" - and I catch it, shouldn't the writer?

Is this because more journalists are going mobile or because of deadlines sometimes the proof reading takes a back seat? When you pick up a newspaper or magazine it's so rare to find errors, maybe I've been conditioned to think a certain way?
