I've been thinking it over this afternoon and I just don't see any way that Butch hires DeBord. I think that Butch thinks Debord is a good coach and I think that Butch has respect for him but at the end of the day the optics are just too bad.
We cannot hire a guy who hasn't called a play in 7 years or coached in a football game in three years to be the offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee. Just can't happen. Our next offensive coordinator needs to be someone that head coaches from programs that we consider ourselves to be on the same level as would consider if they were going through the process right now. Dubord is simply not a candidate like that and because of that I don't believe he will be our OC next year.
Butch knows this and when he sits down to think it through he will be forced, even though his heart may tell him otherwise to go in a different direction. I have had similar dilemmas when hiring in the past and in the end I've had to do what's best for the organization. Butch will too.
