I typically like to focus on the SEC record because we understand that 3 non conference games, if not 4, are going to be automatic wins for an SEC team vs mid majors.
Year 1- 9-4 and 5-3 in the SEC
Year 2- 8-5 and 4-4 in the SEC
Year 3- 9-1 and 8-1 in the SEC (SR year of Kellen Mond who was a Sumlin recruit)
Year 4- 8-4 and 4-4 in the SEC while beating Alabama. Needs to be noted he lost his starting QB for the year early. Another note is how close they were to going 6-6. They had a comeback on final series to beat Colorado 10-7. Then the Alabama game they really should not have won. Luck is involved in every football season but when thinking about the foundation of a program it is worth looking at how you go to your record. Example? Butch Jones fools gold record in 15 and 16 vs what your eyes told you watching the product.
Recruiting rankings by year:
2017- 10th which Sumlin's final class that Jimbo inherited.
2018- year of the coaching change and still had 16th ranked class.
2019- 6th
2020- 6th
2021- 6th
Some food for thought on a coach who is billed as big time.
