1) Why Currie: - If you laid the resumes of Currie, Blackburn, and Fulmer side-by-side with no names, Currie's resume would finish ahead of Blackburn's and way ahead of Fulmer's.
2) Currie's Strengths - He obviously has talent in the areas of fund-raising, organization, athletic academic performance, and facility upgrades. His 9 years or whatever in the UT Athletic Department gives him a good understanding of the history of Tennessee athletics, as well as working experience under Doug Dickey (a good AD) and Mike Hamilton (a terrible AD). With a Masters from UT in Sports Management, he is somewhat of a UT guy.
3) Currie's Fears - My biggest concern with him in this position is he seems to have serious relationship problems with coaches & people who serve under him. K-State Coach Bill Snyder to me seems like one of the true gentleman still left in the world, yet it has been reported the two had several disagreements and did not get along well. Also, he had several disagreements with former Coach Frank Harrell (which I can understand) as well as the present BB Coach.
4) Conclusion - Most of the national media think this is an excellent choice - but only time will tell. As VOL fans, I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt and support him until proven otherwise. I hope his past issues regarding relationships with coaches has been a learning experience for him when he assumes this position on April 1st. I also hope Butch Jones & Rick Barnes succeed and succeed quickly, because I want to see both of them be successful and feel they are quality assets for the University. Go Vols!
