Obviously it’s such a slippery slope there’s no way to police it but the faking of the injuries as a tool against teams getting tired or simply needing a break to regroup is proving rather effective.
In fact, last night was the best example I’ve ever seen of its effectiveness. Lane had clearly instructed his defensive team that whenever the Vols began getting momentum to lay down and be “hurt”. It worked. It threw our guys off their spot and caused the entire offensive team to lose any semblance of rhythm. It led to questionable play calls and even more confusion on the field.
if a team sits in zone against us, we are going to crush them but if they blitz us, our qb isn’t good enough to make them pay. He reverts into a jg like trance and makes foolish decisions like holding into the ball for too long. Overall Kiffin’s chess strategy far exceeded Josh’s checker strategy but even through all of that, josh Heupel is such a good coach he had a chance to win the game at the end. Despite playing a walk on running back significant minutes during significant periods of the game. Despite playing a walk on at right tackle that couldn’t block you or I, despite having if not cheating, unethical play from the other team, despite an officiating crew that is either on the take or truly that incompetent, we were sitting there at the end with the chance to win that game. Quite unbelievable actually.
He’s the guy. Given time, those type games will start to go our way again. Really reminds me of Johnny and his climb from the basement. We’d get close and slide back, close and slide back and then he finally got over the hump. Phillip picked up where he’d left it and took it the rest of the way home. We have our coach. My guess is there will be a few more heartbreakers but it’s gonna be worth it when he climbs to the top of that hill.
Kiffin won’t have the corral kid forever and despite his willingness to be unethical or downright cheat, isn’t good enough to beat our guy without those two things. He will soon be in our rear view and we will be set on overtaking bigger and better things like Athens and Tuscaloosa. I really believe this and believe we are in better shape than we’ve been in 12 years.
