Make a convincing argument to me and anybody who agrees with me that turning over the reigns to Brian Maurer is not the best option for this team and this program right now.
Here’s my argument:
We already know what we have in JG. He’s a subpar SEC QB, and it’s not going to magically get better in the eight games left in this season. More than likely, this is the last season for JG at Tennessee. As a redshirt junior, he’s probably not coming back for another season ... particularly given how this season has gone to date and how it’s likely going to end.
Aside from a handful of snaps, Maurer is a complete unknown as a college QB. Each of you and the coaching staff has noted that he’s not ready to be the starting QB. Last time I checked, no kid that is starting now as a freshmen or that has ever started in Year 1 has been completely ready for that position at this level.
Whose job is it to get them ready? It’s this coaching staff’s job. If he’s not ready, get him ready. As we’ve heard for years, developing players is a big part of being a college coach. And it’s obviously not been done much around here in the last several years. That’s what we’re paying Pruitt $4 million a year to do, and it’s why we have a $1.5 million per year offensive coordinator.
As for who gives us the best chance to win the rest of the way? That’s really kind of irrelevant at this point, IMO. From my standpoint and many others, it literally can’t get any worse. You’re 1-3 and you lost to Georgia Freakin’ State in the season opener. The chances for a bowl game are slim and none, and slim walked out of the building after the season opener. As for the conference season, 0-8 has already been done by this program. So no matter what happens the rest of the, we’ve already hit rock bottom. This is what rock bottom looks like.
Literally the worst that can happen is that Maurer proves he’s not the answer and you need to make contingency plans for next season. On the flip side, you get Maurer some valuable experience. Don’t worry about bruising his physique against UGA and Bama. If he’s who you recruited him to be, that won’t bother him. If anything, it shows him first hand how good he has to be to compete with those teams.
You recruited this kid for a reason. If you don’t think he play, why did you waste a valuable scholarship on him? It’s time to make a change for the future of the program ... and for any future Jeremy Pruitt has with it.
Sorry this was so long, but please respond and tell me your opinion.
Thanks for your content and keeping us informed on UT athletics. You guys do a great job!
