Tennessee football won a come from behind bowl game and entered into the spring ready for bear. Fans were enthused again. Then Covid dashed spring plans and made us all miserable and fearful. Players were sent home with no routine in their life. They had to train on their own, study online, and eat Micky D's again.
Then an ugly event in Minneapolis rocked the country. No need to revisit that.
CJP and the Vols hit the headlines in late spring and early summer for the AMAZING recruiting they were doing under these terrible circumstances. CJP was being recognized nationally as the COACH ON THE RISE! Many on this board were already speculating on what Tennessee would do when Bama came calling her son back home to succeed Saban.
August 17: Players reported back on for their first preseason fall practice. Meanwhile, conference commissioners and politicians were scrambling around like blind men in the dark trying to piece together some semblance of a game schedule with new attendance rules including health protocols, virus testing, contact tracing, quarantines, etc. Can you imagine how confusing every day was?
Along the way, players were being bombarded on BLM issues and wanting to express themselves in protests. CJP received abundant praise for how he managed to hit the sweet spot on all these player related off the field matters.
September 26: The first game. The Vols won AT USCe. Everybody was singing from the rafters.
October 3: Mizzou came to town and the Vols obliterated them. Everybody was toasting this great Coach and staff he put together.
October 10: The 12th ranked Vols invaded Georgia and went into the halftime leading. The first half saw an amazing goal line stand by the Vols and two long TD passes by JG. The beverages were flowing at the homes of all the Vol fans who could not come out due to Covid.
Then....the second half began and the 5th year QB had a HUGE meltdown. The defense lasted as long as it could and finally gave out.
October 17: Kentucky comes to visit and they have an attitude. But it was Kentucky, right? The 5th Year quarterback had the meltdown to end all meltdowns throwing 2 picksixes and fumbling another time and the Vols were down 17-0 before fans could open their second beer.
And suddenly, this young Head Coach...this guy who was resurrecting recruiting, who had been guiding the Vols through many uncharted dangerous waters all year, who had a 7 game winning streak......SUDDENLY BECAME STUPID!
October 24: Bama came to town and administered a complete asskicking. Most overlooked the fact that Bama had done that to the other teams they had played too, but that no longer mattered. The HEAD COACH had turned STUPID. He was lost! He began to be dishonest. He kept trotting out this 5th year QB while hiding the 5 star freshman. How could he be so stupid? Perhaps he could get it fixed, practice the freshman QB, and turn it around at Arkansas...a team playing surprisingly well.
November 7: The Vols are favored to beat Arky and take a 13-0 lead into the half. The 5th year QB was in concussion protocol the second half and Arky scored 24 unanswered points..and the coach became dumber.
November 13: It is disclosed that 8 assistant coaches refused to take 10% paycuts. CJP must be lying about all the controversy because he suddenly not only became stupid but also dishonest.
That about wraps it up. In a span of 27 days...Coach Pruitt went from the toast of the college football scene, to the dumbest cornbread eating liar that ever coached college football.
2020 has proven to be the most screwed up year in most of our lives. And now we can't celebrate Thanksgiving with more than 10 people and Christmas is out of the question.
Will it ever end?
