It would seem as if our Vols are in store for some new divisional opponents. We are one of the 3 closest current SEC members to all of the below schools. Seems as though us having to play some of these guys regularly is almost a certainty with that data point, despite long-standing traditions with most other SEC members.
Most coveted:
Clemson - 190mi
UNC - 330mi
Virginia - 370mi
Other possible options:
Georgia Tech - 210mi
VA Tech - 240mi
Louisville - 250mi
NCSU/Duke - 350mi
Pitt - 490mi
We are equidistant with the Gamecocks to UVA, but it makes way more sense to align USCe with the Florida schools than UT.
We are equidistant with Georgia to the Tar Heels, but again UGA much closer to the potential Florida trifecta.
UVA and UNC have a game they call the South's Oldest Rivalry and if they keep those two together it would make the most sense to add UT in to that mix.
Obviously we would be closest with Kentucky if they add anything more to the North like Louisville or Pitt, however unlikely. Mizzou may be a candidate to go with more northern teams.
One way or another if there is anything like permanent opponents moving forward, we are probably getting some new ones.
