Folks staying in SAT and Austin must visit Lockhart, TX. It's the BBQ Capital of Texas. The oldest and most authentic bbq joints in the world. SAT folks can pass through on the way to College Station and it's a short ride south of Austin.
3 main joints: Black's, Kreutz Market and Smitty's
The best brisket, huge beef ribs, sausage links, etc served on butcher paper. Fresh onions, pickles, jalaps, white bread and sauce on the side. As real as it gets.
Don't buy into the Austin trendy joints. You'll be waiting for hours to get exactly what they stole from Lockhart.
