in my expert opinion...
15 or so practices into fall camp and neither coach has eliminated anyone from a 3 man position battle. And both have difficult early season schedules (AU plays Clemson, TAM, LSU in first month...while UGA gets Ole Miss, USCe, UNC and even us pretty quickly)
Plus, each school is dealing with camp issues at receiver and running back.
Smart has the most bad luck in that Jacob Eason is obviously a legit, but young prospect that simply hasn't looked as good in fall camp as he did in their spring game, while Malzahn has just never honestly recruited a quality SEC QB to Auburn, ever (Cam fell in their laps when MSU cheaped out on the money and Nick Marshall was a db who was supposed to be playing defense at Georgia). Since then it has been all crap.
The primary issue they each have today is that they are running 3 man races and not 2 right now. Whomever their 9/3 starters are going to be have only been getting one third of the reps through what is now over half of fall camp, and neither coach has signaled that they are going to be eliminating anyone in the next 48-72 hours (which probably means that all three get only 30 or so of the reps in the next 100 play scrimmage on Saturday).
I don't like it if I am a fan of either team. They will show back up to work this coming Monday probably still in a two man rotation with only about 8 or 9 full-scale practices to go before kickoff, much less Week 1 game prep. Plus, right now/the next 4 days are when teams should be hitting the tail end of their most intense, productive camp practices of the fall-with QB's really dialing themselves in. Everyone scales back later on this week and early next so you can rest everyone's legs a second before you start first game prep.
Yet here are UGA and AU still letting no one have more than 1/3 of any of the live reps (all 6 players need as much work as they can get for various reasons)....not developing live timing with their receivers, learning reads, game management, etc etc.
I don't know who has the biggest issue for 2016 either. UGA has the marquee talent in Eason (but he is performing third best at present and will have a steep learning curve once he does play) and the guy who is third most talented (Ramsey) is playing better than the others, but he is actually not that good.
Auburn simply has 3 guys who all are equally incapable of running both phases of Malzahn's offense.
Both of these passing games could start off very slowly this fall.
I like it. Obviously we play UGA, so F 'em, but if Auburn pulls a 1-3 September (which they can easily accomplish, even with decent play), Malzahn will be in a tough spot and maybe we can capitalize on a few more of the recruiting battles we always seem to end up in.
