is the example I am looking for.
He was/is a first-time HC at Kentucky. He was a career DC.
He had to grow into that job, while on the job.
I feel like a bunch of you would quickly trade Pruitt for Stoops, and I understand that, but...
His first 4 years:
2-10
5-7
5-7
7-6
5th Year? Also 7-6.
He is now the 15th highest paid coach at $5 million per (Pruitt is 30th).
Yes, Kentucky is not Tennessee and has lower expectations. No way Stoops would have survived at Tenn if he went 7-6 in his 5th year.
6th year he went 10-3
The point being: 1st-time head coaches typically need time to grow into the job. And you should KNOW THAT when you hire a 1st-time head coach. If you don't have the patience for that, then don't hire him. I suspect Fulmer knew this and that is why it is/was a 5-year plan. The question is: if Pruitt doesn't have a winning season in year 4, will the 5-year plan be thrown out the window?
