Secretary of Defense James Mattis met President Trump's new national security adviser, John Bolton, at the Pentagon Thursday afternoon, and he broke the ice with a joke.
"It's good to finally meet you," Mattis said as the two walked up the steps of the Pentagon. "I heard you're actually the devil incarnate, and I wanted to meet you."
Bolton responded by laughing as they entered the building.
Mattis is known for his sometimes colorful rhetoric. He once reportedly advised U.S. Marines, "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."
In an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation," host John Dickerson asked Mattis, "What keeps you awake at night?"
He quickly responded, "Nothing. I keep other people awake at night."
