We've had lots of back and forth on mid major vs P5 basketball.
I thought this story about how Shaka Smart transitioned from VCU (Mid Major) to Texas (P5) was illuminating.
From the story:
"At VCU, Smart had specialized in finding what he calls "wild dogs," players who had few or perhaps zero scholarship offers and played with a burning desire to prove their worth. At Texas, however, he understood that he would need to procure top-30 players who were good enough to go to the NBA after one or two college seasons."
This story talks about the adjustment from mid-major to P5 school.
"It’s no longer enough to make occasional remarks at a booster function or do an interview here or there or advance in the NCAA tournament or snare a top-100 recruit once every year or two, as it was at VCU; it is an all-day, every-day expectation. "
“You’re functioning as much like a politician in the state as you are a basketball coach,” said Lance Blanks, a former Texas basketball player and NBA executive. “The adjustment for him, it’s been pretty intense.”
