The price for a top shelf OC is now north of 7 figures. Muschamp will get 1.6 million ... LSU pays 1.3+ million for each of their coordinators ... Alabama pays 1.3 million and 700,000 for their coordinators.

And Tennessee? What are we paying our OC? .... $480,000. Auburn has three position coaches that make more than that. And the total pool that Tennessee allocates to assistants is 3.3 million plus some increase for 2015 ... when all is said and done, Tennessee will probably still be in the bottom half of the SEC for assistants pay.

So, why are we surprised that leading candidates are has-beens or low-ends? Why should we expect to land above average talent with below average pay?

With such a limited pool of money for assistants, Jones has two choices. (1) He can pay a lot for an OC, but then we won't have enough to give our existing coaches significant raises and we risk losing them ... or (2) if we pay to increase the salaries of our existing coaches and keep them generally in line with other schools in the SEC, then we won't have enough to pay for an OC.

Apparently, Butch is choosing (2).
