Most "influential" Amrican Rock Band ever?

My buddy asked me and it is still bugging me. Have to leave out solo acts (e.g., Elvis, Bob Dylan) and has to be an US band, so Hendrix Experience (which is categorized as British by many) is outside the category.

Best I could do was come up with candidates for specific decades or a genre of rock. His vote was Velvet Underground. Hard to argue that one, but I did. My initial thoughts were The Beach Boys, Grateful Dead, The Eagles, Alice Cooper, The Ramones, Van Halen, Nirvana... Each and others influential in their subset of rock.
