My son and I made the trip. Stayed in Dallas with family and drove down.
First the game day experience. Their fans were extremely nice and we were treated very well. Stadium was top of the line and gorgeous. A lot of people have echoed our thoughts about it being weird. Obviously isn't weird to aggies but to other SEC fans very. To best describe it is to say it felt like a non conference game. It's just not SEC country. They seem to love the idea of being in the SEC but to me it didn't seem real or genuine. I got the feeling they just liked the fact they were in the SEC and Texas isn't. Huge big brother complex there. I told an aggie fan next to me that it seems they hate Texas more than they like A@M. He sorta agreed with me. As for The 12th Man...very overrated to me. Don't get me wrong it got loud a few times but NOWHERE near Neyland loud. my son and I were having conversations during big third downs without yelling to hear each other. Best way to describe it is its loud but there is no passion. When we had erased the 21 point deficit and tied it the fans around us were like oh well we really blew that very nonchalantly. I told them that if Tennessee blew a 21 point lead at home Neyland would be full of folks going ballistic. Even when they got the last interception it wasn't crazy loud. And their fans exited the stadium like it was just another game. My son commented how can they not be going crazy with that ending. I said I don't know. And as for pregame things their really aren't any. The cadets march in was cool but not a very rousing. The campus was so quiet compared to Knoxville, Tuscaloosa, the grove, etc. Imagine going to the strip on game day and there being no Rocky Top blaring. No wild partying or fans yelling and getting pumped up. Also no band playing. They had a band but it never played college football type marching band songs. Oh well to each their own but give me the blue bloods of the old SEC.
On the field. Hate to sound like one of those guys but we were so much better than A@M but too many mistakes. Their fans actually think they are going to beat bama. Delusional. Bama will name their score in my opinion. Thought Kamara was best player on the field for either team. Also I think Hurd would have had a huge day against those guys. Line blocked great and they were not very good tacklers. Awesome comeback! watched the 4th quarter standing down by one of the corridors and there were actually Vol fans walking past us leaving. I said to some of them "Really? You came all this way to Texas and you are leaving early on "this" team this year??
Anyway had a great trip overall and we need to get healthy and finish year strong. GO VOLS!
