First let me say that this is a massive addition for a Tennessee team that desperately needed help in the back court. I think we are great in the front court with Williams, Fulkerson, Schofield especially with the hope that Alexander can take another step as a role player. Throw in Derrick Walker (who I really like) and potentially Yves Pons depending on if Barnes wants to play him like Hubbs at the 4.
Daniels as a player
1) Playmaker- he shoots, gets to the rim and has a mid range game. This is rare to be able to combine all three. Most players have 1 of 3 or 2 of 3. He has them all.
Watch this kid on film how he is patient off a ball screen, sets his man up, makes a move and gets into the lane. Tennessee had ONE player who could get in the lane last year.... ONE! Daniels will be able to do that which is the absolute biggest necessity on offense.
2) Mid range- being smaller and playing against more length and athleticism in the SEC this is going to greatly help him. He can elevate and shoot, step back etc
3) Elevate on shot- showed the ability to elevate from mid range and 3 to get his shot off. Again very rare at the college level.
4) Ball handling- This showed last year with Turner having to bring the ball up the court with pressure. This kid will have no problem at all handling it. He is smooth and has moves. He is in control and the defensive player knows it (very underrated). As a defender I knew when a ball handler was not confident and I attacked. This will also really help the Vols by being able to push the pace.
Some are concerned it won't translate. So here is the disclaimer. He played in the MEAC which may very well be the worst conference in the nation. Certainly very low. He was a volume shooter and what has to be understood about playing at a school like Howard is simply... he had to be.
As far as the Vols are concerned he won't be shooting 20 times a game obviously. He year he averaged 27 PPG he also averaged 3 APG which in college is a really nice number. He will be more of a 7-9 shots a game player who will absolutely have those games where he goes off. Because regardless of where you play if you are a Division 1 player dropping 27 a night that is getting it done. Ohio State, Michigan, Louisville and Syracuse don't push for a kid if he can't play.
He will give us a much needed play maker who can get in the lane, break the defense down to score of pass (his 3 APG show he can dish the rock). The combo of adding him and Darrington will make our back court look significantly different. Really big pick up for Tennessee right here.
