As of right now Joe Milton is a thrower, not a passer. It was obvious he had a lot of predetermined routes he threw and never really read the coverages. Unfortunately this showed up a lot on his Michigan game films too. He seems to struggle with pre snap coverage reads, many times BG would go two deep safety against our trips the receiver inside the numbers will always be the first read and open route bc defenses will roll the safety over the middle receiver in trips and leave the middle of the field vacant. Then when they went one deep safety the crossing routes will be open and Joe missed at least 5 or 6 of those Thursday night, honestly he never even seem to know to look for it. This can get better with reps and better pre snap recognition, but don't look for the light bulb to just come on, it will be a real work in progress. Second thing i noticed with Milton, is honestly he has heard to much of how strong of an arm he has and he tries to just rifle his way out of trouble sometimes. As I said, he is a thrower more than passer and has to learn to know where his progressions are within the play, not just dance around in the pocket directing traffic. Honestly, the receivers need to do a better job catching what is thrown their way also. It wasn't all on Milton, but like it or not it all starts and ends with the trigger man.
The run game was solid and can be a real positive for this team, but SEC teams will load the box to stop our run game and force Milton to beat them throwing it. The inside zone run will have to be focus moving forward , because as the season goes SEC teams will attack the mesh point with OLB or Nickels in run blitz to keep it turned inside. Small and Evans both showed outstanding vision and feet, i truly believe even more they could combine for 1600 yards or better this year.
The Oline showed well but the real barometer is this Saturday and can our tackles handle speed rushers off the edge. The run blocking was pretty impressive and I loved the attack style blocking concepts of pulling B/S guards and tackles to the point of attack and even kicking out with the TEs on several outside zone runs.
Defensely, I really liked how we attack the offense, especially from the push of the interior linemen and i believe the outside rush will only get better as the year goes. I also, feel UT has real quality depth this year on the line and shouldn't wear down like years past. Thought Banks and Mitchell both had pretty solid games, but Banks will get picked on with play action bc he is so aggressive, but i had rather try and slow a guy down than to try and get him to play faster.
The secondary seem to honestly communicate well, tackle well and for the most part played aggressive the whole night. Really like what i saw from Theo Jackson, he played with great instincts and clearly has a lot of confidence right now. The secondary as a whole honestly had a pretty good night overall and I believe they will continue to get better during the season.
Just my two cents on a few things and really look forward to the whole team getting better and hopefully Mighty Joe can become the passer the offense needs.
