The GQ has always said Herbie has a soft spot for the Vols, but I didn't know the backstory until now.
At the 37-minute mark, he's discussing what it was like to be recruited as a high school QB. He says Kevin Steele was so relentless and so friendly that it made him really want to go to Tennessee, just to hang out with Steele, if nothing else. Says if he had made a campus visit to Knoxville, he very easily could have ended up a Vol because it would have been hard to say no to the history and tradition. Plus, he points out other Ohio natives like Chuck Webb were recruited to Tennessee in the 80s.
Clay is a polarizing figure on this board, but I highly recommend these podcasts. They're long-form interviews that are basically 2-hour biographies and have included the likes of Paul Finebaum, Greg Sankey, Mike Leach, etc.
