Hello, all.
It seems that life is more funny than any of the films I've recommended throughout this quasi "series," given the fact that whatever tears might be shed now are of joy at this incredible recruiting run [are our bagmen paying in bitcoin now in order to observe social distancing?]. That's a far cry from the beginning of the month... but what a difference a day [or a month] can make.
So, today marks the end of this little cinematic vanity project of mine, and I'm going with what really should be considered one of the standards... but, since so many people probably haven't seen it, it may be counted more as a hidden gem.
The film is none other than ANNIE HALL.
From IMDb, the plot is about how "Neurotic New York comedian Alvy Singer falls in love with the ditzy Annie Hall."
Simple enough, that... but it pretty much encapsulates the film, particularly for those of you who are familiar with any of Woody Allen's other projects [or his real-life exploits, perhaps]. In case you're not familiar, I've embedded the trailer for the film below:
Even if you're unfamiliar with Allen's cinematic pursuits, you're no doubt familiar with shows like "Seinfeld" or "Curb Your Enthusiasm," which I'd argue follow the same basic template that's established in Allen's films, chiefly this one. And why not follow a format that earned the film several Oscars?
Assuming you like those sitcoms I alluded to above, then this flick should hit all of the right notes. It really is great, and manages to feel about as real as a Hollyweird take on relationships can... without going into KRAMER VS KRAMER or ORDINARY PEOPLE territory, naturally. Or into HAROLD AND MAUDE territory, for that matter... tho' I confess to having a real fondness for that one.
Anyway, that does it - here's hoping that this film [or one that I've recommended along the way] hits the comedic spot for the fine denizens of the GQ.
