Hello, all. I'm sure that nobody on the boards has ever had a bad date or an obsessed ex [he says with tongue firmly planted in cheek], so it's for those of you who have ever had such an experience, as well as those who haven't, that I go international for today's horror film recommendation. While some of my picks have been [and will continue to be] a little more conventional and well known than others, there's a good chance that you have not heard of this one... AUDITION. If you're interested, I've embedded the trailer below.
As as the case with many trailers, this one gives away a little too much... but what it does give away is that Takashi Miike knows how to direct a horror film. This one is not nearly so indulgent as ICHI THE KILLER [also directed by Miike (who some of you may know made a brief cameo in HOSTEL)] and is instead more of a slow burn... but there is a moment [unfortunately shown in the trailer] around the midpoint of the film that is decidedly of the whiskey tango foxtrot variety. From that point onward, the film becomes a more sinister sort of FATAL ATTRACTION, and Miike does a good job of building tension until [and through] the final scene.
Just as an aside, I haven't really been going into any real depth with respect to the plots of these films because I've been linking the trailers. If that's something that any of you feel I need to throw in, I can include a brief summary of the plot. Jussayin'. Still, as @Rockbridgemessiah said in reply to an earlier post in this "series," I'm kind of hoping to provide just a little more than the recommendation - the logic behind that is, the less you know about the film, the more you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you see. Perhaps that isn't logical at all; but, it makes sense in my head, so I'm hopeful it translates to the rest of the VQ faithful.
Enjoy!
