I know there have multiple threads about HVAC work but I thought I would explain my specific situation and get some insight in regards to the issue I have encountered.

Recently moved into a new, two story home in Brentwood. Once the hot days rolled around our upstairs unit (2.5 ton unit, brand unknown) was not cooling below 74 degrees and on really hot days it was basically running all day to stay at that setting. Local HVAC group I used in my prior house came out and after noting the coolant level was low and filling up with five pounds of Freon which then did not cure the problem, diagnosed that I have a couple of more far reaching problems I inherited noted below.

1. The handler in my attic is turned where it is inefficiently receiving the air from the unit downstairs and is blowing through the handler and in turn makes the air less efficient as it comes out into the upstairs duct work.

2. Duct work is at 6' throughout the upstairs and was told it needs to be at 7' and this would make a huge difference.

3. There needs to be at least three new vents added into "dead space" areas upstairs to help with cooling certain rooms more efficiently.

After sitting down with a consultant he comes to me and lays a quote of $12,500 that is not itemized like I requested but is basically going to replace both heating and cooling units (which are seven years old BTW and working and he wants to put a 3.0 ton unit in even though his load readout after taking measurements was for a 2.5 unit), along with replacement of all upstairs duct work from 6' to 7' and addition of three new vents and accompanying duct work.

I apologize for the length of this but I have seen a few HVAC threads on here so I thought I would give this a try on top of the other quotes I am about to get and see if I could get any professional feedback. I had noticed that @PowellVolz seems to be involved in some of these threads so I would love your assessment as well.

Thanks in advance.
