Please forgive me for a non-Vol, off-topic post. Several of you have asked about my wife and her progress over the past few weeks, so I thought I would just do a broad update. One year ago (yesterday) my wife was diagnosed with cancer. She has non-small cell lung cancer (never smoked a day in her life) that had spread to the brain and bone. She received radiation treatment on the brain and those spots are incredibly tiny now (may even be scar tissue). All the MRIs have been very good. My wife takes a targeted therapy medication (not a traditional chemotherapy type drug) for the lung cancer and bone spread. She has responded well to this medication and the spots in her lung and bone are now very small. She continues on this medication and will be on it until a time is reached where the tumors no longer respond to it. It is much better tolerated than chemotherapy, but it does have some side effects. My wife has had some really bad skin reactions (for those with a medical background, it is an EGFR inhibitor, so those skin reactions are expected). She gets an Xgeva injection monthly to help her bones get stronger. Her hair from the radiation treatment is now growing back....a different color and texture, which is fascinating.
It has been a long and tough journey over the past year. My wife is a warrior! I'm proud of her and how she has handled the ordeal. Every day is a new adventure. Just this past week a mass popped up on her neck and we are off to get an ultrasound and biopsy....it appears to be a hemorrhagic cyst on the thyroid. We have been blessed by the response to treatments, the many friends/family that have encouraged and helped us, the fantastic healthcare providers, and the opportunity to grow closer together through adversity. Simply put, we are blessed and the BEST is yet to come.
