Many of you know that my wife has non-small cell lung cancer with metastasis (spread) to the brain and bone. She received her diagnosis 21 months ago. She received oral targeted therapy at first and eventually that drug quit working, which was unfortunately expected. Since September my wife has had a pulmonary embolus, anemia requiring transfusion, stroke, and a really large pleural effusion. Many of those occurred secondary to her cancer advancing.
I'm with her this AM as she is starting day 1 of a new clinical trial at Sarah Cannon Research Institute. Here's the interesting info: she is the first patient being enrolled in this study in the world. The drug has been used in another trial in some Asian patients (less than 20 patients). My wife is the first American to receive this drug and the first Caucasian patient to receive the drug in the world. Obviously our prayer is that this drug will work and knock this cancer back.
I have always known that my wife was a strong woman.....I keep being shown just how strong. She's an absolute warrior! While having to endure this just stinks, a positive is that my boys get to see their mom fight. I know she has inspired them....she certainly has me.
GBO!!
